Sports Medicine Overview

Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers, health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.

Here at Fort Valley State University, we are very concerned with the well-being and health of our athletes. The Sports Medicine Department is led by Head Athletic Trainer, Jeff Gilbert, ATC/L and he is assisted by a team of dedicated student trainers. As a team we accomplish the following tasks:

• Determination of athletes’ readiness to participate, in conjunction with the team physician (e.g., preparticipation evaluation and post-injury/illness return)
• Risk management and injury prevention
• Recognition, evaluation and immediate treatment of athletic injuries/illnesses
• Rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries
• Psychosocial intervention and referral
• Nutritional aspects of injuries/illnesses
• Health care administration
• Professional development to maintain and improve knowledge and skills

We also have several students who volunteer their time to help make Sports Medicine a success. Their duties include coverage of practices, traveling with teams, treatment hours and attendance at games and competitions. The students are not only involved in the athlete’s medical recovery, but the exposure of the profession of athletic training as well.

FVSU Sports Medicine is supported by two very prestigious medical offices; Early Family Practice and Middle Georgia Orthopeadic Surgery and Sports Medicine. With the support of these practices, we are able to handle sports injuries quickly and more efficiently, allowing athletes a safe return to competition.
