On day one of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Track & Field Championship (May 27th) on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University, the Fort Valley State University (FVSU) Track & Field Program provided solid proof that its national notoriety is well deserved.

In the women's long jump competition, junior Antoinette Oglesby provided an encore performance to her top five finish last year with a fourth place finish in the event this season.  Her best leap of 5.88 meters gave her a brief lead in the competition on her way to capturing fourth in her secondary event.  The 2009 national champion in the triple jump will defend her national title on Friday (May 28th).

The first day of championship competition was successful for FVSU in the 4x100 meter relays.  In the preliminary round, the Lady Wildcats (Tiffany Moore, Shankevia Burke, Portia Wilson and Raven Wilson) advanced to Saturday's (May 29th) finals with a sixth place qualifying time of 45.96.

That same event proved just as successful for the men.  With a preliminary round time of 40.32, the 4x100 meter relay team of John Brown, Roger Chaney, Aaron Allen, and Keon Montgomery finished fourth and will contend for the national title on Saturday.

It's on to the championship round for FVSU in the women and men 100 meter dash events.  Speedster Portia Wilson will represent the Lady Wildcats in the national championship after posting a time 11.56 in the event and easily qualifying with a fourth place finish in the preliminary round.

The 10.47 finish for Keon Montgomery in the men's 100 meter dash qualified him for Saturday's championship run.  Montgomery finished with the third best time in the event.
