Wildcats Unable to Hold Lead in Loss to Stillman

By: FVSU Office of Sports Information

For the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) the sting of Saturday’s loss will last for quite a while.  In a first half in which they led by as many as 23 points, the Wildcats were not able to maintain the momentum into the second half and eventually lost to the Tigers of Stillman College, 98-87.  Without question, the loss was one of the most disappointing of the season for the Wildcats.

Leading 47-30 at halftime, the Wildcats played the first half like a team injected with a breath of freshness.  From the opening tip, practically all balls were bouncing FVSU’s way.  They were 16 of 38 in field goal shooting with seven three-point baskets and eight of 12 from the free throw line.  They forced nine Stillman turnovers in the first half and converted those into 10 Wildcat points.  The 17-point halftime lead had the entire Wildcat contingent in the HPE Arena giddy with the prospect of a Wildcat win.

However, the Wildcats were outscored 68-40 in the second half as Stillman’s Skyler Williams and Lajay Sears finished with a combined 51 points to lead the second half surge.  Double figure scoring by FVSU’s  Darrell Aiken (20 points); Jeremy Sledge (18 points); Steven Gill (15 points); and Kenneth Simmons (13 points) was still not enough to quell the Tiger comeback.

The Wildcats are now 7-14 overall and 5-13 in conference play and return to action on Tuesday (February 9th) they meet the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College in the Frank Forbes Arena on the Morehouse Campus.  Tip off is at 7:30 p.m.
