SIAC Tournament Brackets Announced: Lady Wildcats get 1st Round bye,

Wildcats to play on Tuesday

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announced the women’s and men’s seedings for the 77th SIAC Basketball Tournament which will take place March 2nd -6th in Atlanta, GA at Frank L. Forbes Arena, located on the campus of Morehouse College.

 

Lady Wildcats

In the women’s field the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) took the top seed with a record setting season of 26-1 (21-1 in conference play). The 26-1 mark is the best regular season finish in the history of Lady Wildcats Basketball.  The Lady Wildcats, who finished the regular season with 11 straight wins, are currently ranked number one in the NCAA Division II South Region and number eight in the nation according to the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll.

 

As the number one seed, the Lady Wildcats received a bye in the opening round and will not begin tournament play until Wednesday (March 3rd) in the quarterfinal round at 4 p.m. They will meet the winner of the first round match up between the eighth ranked Lady Tigers of Stillman College and the ninth ranked Lady Lions of Paine College.   

 

FVSU is led by Preseason SIAC Player of the Year Takesha Riggs who leads the conference in steals (3.2/game), ranks third in assist (3.8/game), and sixth in scoring (15.5 ppg) as well as Preseason All-SIAC selection Kendra Evans.

WFVS LP-104.3 FM will provide live radio coverage of the Lady Wildcats quarterfinal game beginning at 3:50 p.m. on Wednesday (March 3rd).   The game can also be heard via the internet at www.fvsu.edu.

 

Wildcats

On the men’s side, the Wildcats of FVSU have been seeded 11th for the tournament.  With a 9-18 overall record (7-17 in conference play), the Wildcats will begin first round action on Tuesday (March 2nd) at 7 p.m. when they meet the sixth ranked Dragons of Lane College.

 

While the Dragons defeated the Wildcats twice during the regular season, FVSU will be looking for a tournament upset behind the play of Darrell Aiken (the team’s leading scorer), Steven Gill (the team’s leading rebounder) and sharp shooters Randy Graham and Jeremy Sledge. The winner will face the third seeded Tigers of Tuskegee University in the quarterfinal round.
