In this week’s USA Today ESPN Division II Women’s Top 25 Coaches’ Poll (released on February 23rd), the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) made history with their ranking as the nation’s eighth best NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Team. Previously ranked 10th, the rise represents the highest national ranking for any Lady Wildcats Basketball Team in the history of FVSU Athletics.
With a total of 474 points, the Lady Wildcats rose to the eighth place ranking in the poll after first appearing in the rankings at 21st, then to 15th, then down to 12th, and after an unexpected loss back to 14th, then down to 11th and then to10th. With a current record of 25-1overall and 20-1 in conference play, the Lady Wildcats have also set a record for the best regular season record in the history of FVSU Women’s Basketball.
As the first place team in the NCAA Division II South Region, the Lady Wildcats are also in first place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). With only one game remaining in the regular season, a win in that contest and a conference title in the SIAC Tournament starting on March 2nd will ensure that the Lady Wildcats will host the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament in the HPE Arena.
The final regular season game for the Lady Wildcats will take place on Thursday, February 25th at 5:30p.m. (CST) when the Lady Wildcats travel to Tuskegee, Alabama to meet the Tigerettes of Tuskegee University. Live radio coverage of that game can be heard on WFVS LP104.3 or on the internet at www.fvsu.edu.
