Lady Wildcats Stump Lady Magicians
By: FVSU Office of Sports Information
In what appeared to be a reversal of roles, in last night’s basketball match up between the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) and the Lady Magicians of Lemoyne-Owen College, it was the Lady Wildcats who worked their magic in a 78-63 win. In a first half in which they converted 19 of 35 baskets; five of nine three point shots; and three of six free throws, the Lady Wildcats slight of hands led to a comfortable 46-24 halftime lead.
That same Lady Wildcat magic continued into the second half. In fact, with 12:08 remaining in the game, FVSU had expanded its lead by 27 points. Naturally, with such a large lead, the Lady Wildcats opted to utilize reserve personnel to close the game. That magic feat almost backfired. With a Lady Magician team not yet willing to concede defeat, the hefty Lady Wildcat lead was dwindled to as little as nine points.
Since the Lady Magicians were getting too close for comfort, the Lady Wildcats were forced to re-enlist the services of most of the starting line up. That reinsertion squashed the Lady Magician rally and secured the win for FVSU.
Bianca Thornton led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 15 points. She also had two rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Takesha Riggs finished with 11 points and five rebounds while Jasmine Birdsong barely missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Wildcats are now 18-1 overall and 13-1 in conference play. They return to action on Saturday night (January 30th) when they host the Lady Panthers of Clark Atlanta University at 6 p.m. in the HPE Arena. The game will be followed by men’s action featuring the Wildcats and Panthers.
General admission for Wildcats Basketball games is $7.
