In last night’s Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) match up between the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) and the Lady Bears of Miles College, the number one ranked Lady Wildcats wasted little time asserting its dominance over the fourth ranked Lady Bears. In a game in which FVSU never trailed, the Lady Wildcats upped their season record to 17-1 with a 79-56 win.
Played in FVSU’s Health & Physical Education (HPE) Complex, the Lady Wildcats shot an impressive 49% from the floor for the game. The 45% (14 of 31) first half shooting performance along with the 53.8% second half field goal percentage represent some of the highest totals for the Lady Wildcats this season. And while only one Lady Wildcat finished the game in double figure scoring, all but one FVSU player scored in the 23-point win.
Senior guard and team captain Takesha Riggs led the Lady Wildcats with a 14 point night. Despite fouling out of the game with over seven minutes remaining, Riggs also had four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Four Lady Wildcats contributed eight points to the win. The foursome included Kendra Evans who returned to the Lady Wildcat lineup for the first time since the Christmas break. Although a bit rusty, Evans finished with eight points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.
In addition to Evans, Brandi Haynes, Bianca Thornton, and Cheree Taylor had eight points. Taylor’s point output was her highest of the season.
Speaking of the number eight, last night’s game was the first of an eight game home stand for the Lady Wildcats. Now 11-1 in SIAC play, the Lady Wildcats return to action on Thursday night at 6 p.m. when they host the Lady Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College.
