The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) held its annual outdoor track and field championships this past weekend in Atlanta on the campus of Morehouse College. Fort Valley’s men’s track team finished fourth in the team totals with 89 points. Morehouse College captured the team championship with 209 points.
Ricardo Lockette and Keon Montgomery helped to lead the Wildcats to victories in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Lockette, who has already qualified for the NCAA Championships in the event, finished in first place with a time of 10.46 seconds. Lockette also won first place in the high jump with a time of 1.98 meters. Montgomery (10.70) and Jeffery Mosley (10.73) rounded out the Wildcats’ strong finish in the race with third and fourth place finishes. In the 200m, Montgomery who was in lane 7, won the race with a time of 21.66 seconds. In the 400 meters, Marquis Andrews was nipped at the wire by Albany State’s Oladipo Adeshina to finish in second place. Adeshima stopped the clocks with a time of 47.21 seconds with Andrews right behind at 47.39.
Fort Valley also swept both relay races. In the 4x100, the Wildcats (who came into the #1 ranked relay in Division II) put on another strong showing in the prelims and the finals. The team of Marquis Andrews, Keon Montgomery, Quartrez Strickland and Jeffery Mosley broke the tape first with a time of 40.30 seconds. The 4x400 meter relay team (Strickland, Andrews, Mosley and Montgomery) won its race with a D-II provisional qualifying time of 3:10.47.
The outdoor track season is not over yet for the Wildcats. Fort Valley is scheduled to compete in more meets before the NCAA Outdoor Championships scheduled for May 21-23 in San Angelo, Texas.
