The Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to the Lady Tigers of Benedict College Wednesday afternoon. With the two losses, Fort Valley State falls to 20-21 overall, 8-8 in the SIAC. The game was a rescheduled contest due to bad weather earlier in the season.
In the first game, Benedict answered the opening bell with two runs in the top half of the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead. Fort Valley answered back with three runs in the second and two more in the third inning to regain the lead 5-2. In the top half of the sixth, the Lady Tigers pulled to within one run to make the count 5-4, but the Lady’Cats responded with what seemed to be two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 7-4. Benedict came back in the top of the seventh inning with five runs, fueled by three FVSU errors, to take the lead 9-7. The Lady Cats came up scoreless in the bottom half of the inning for the final score in the first outing. Benedict’s last inning heroics tempered the efforts FVSU catcher Courtney Purser. Purser was 2-3 at the plate, scored two runs and knocked in two RBI’s to pace FVSU offensively.
Benedict wasted no time in grabbing control of the second game. The Lady Tigers scored nine runs in the first three innings before eventually subduing the Lady’Cats 11-1. Ronkeya Garner (who went 1-3) scored Fort Valley’s lone run.
With the two wins, the Lady Tigers improved to 11-13 overall, 3-5 in the SIAC. The two teams are scheduled to play again on Friday (April 17) in Columbia, SC.
