After last Saturday's win in the 20th Annual Fountain City Classic against the Golden Rams of Albany State University (35-13), the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University are a shining example of the old adage that “Hard work yields great rewards.” In addition to bragging rights, the win also translated into individual recognition from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) for several Wildcat players. In fact, for week 11 of the college football season, four of the five SIAC Player of the Week categories included FVSU players.
Senior quarterback Nathaniel Samas was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week in the SIAC. He completed 16-of-26 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns. Completing passes to seven different receivers, Samas was named Most Valuable Player of the 20th Annual Fountain City Classic.
Sophomore defensive back Dajuan Williams was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week. In addition to four tackles, Williams had a career, single-game high three interceptions and two pass break ups.
For the fifth time this season, sophomore punter Marquette King has been named SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week. King's performance on Saturday was outstanding. He averaged 42.7 yards per punt. Four of his nine punts were downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line and his longest punt covered 64 yards.
After guaranteeing a Fountain City Classic win earlier in the week, senior offensive center Collin Cordell played like a man bent on keeping his promise. Grading out at 98% on his run and pass blocking assignments, Cordell was named Offensive Lineman of the Week for the second time this season.
Finally, freshman defensive back Dominique Patterson gained honorable mention for his performance last weekend. Patterson finished with five (5) tackles and four (4) pass break ups.
